It was a group of hunters who had found the whalecarcass. On the third day he heard the voicesof men outside. Hestayed inside the whale for another few days eating the ribcage. The dead body washed up onto shorebut Raven could not get out because the giant mouth was closed. Raven tookhis knife and cut out Whale's heart and ate it, killing the greatcreature immediately. One day, Whale told Raven that thewater was getting shallower and that they were near land. Heate his liver and other parts, but left the heart. Once most of the flesh had beencooked and eaten, Raven began to pull out Whale's organs as well. Raven agreed at thetime and spent many days living inside the whale's body eating hismeat whenever he grew hungry, which was most of the time. Whale knew that he had been trickedso he pleaded with Raven not to eat his heart. He waswearing a backpack with his knife and some firewood in it, and onceinside he cut meat from the whale and cooked it over a smallfire. When the creature's mouth was openfar enough, Raven ran into his mouth and down his throat. "If you open your mouth," said Raven,"I will show you how our throats are the same shape, which provesthat we are cousins."Īlthough the giant whale was notcompletely satisfied, he was soon opening his mouth for Ravennonetheless. The whale was curious and asked howhe could prove their relation. "Oh," said Raven, "it is true and Ican prove it to you." We cannot be relatives," said the greatwhale. "That is impossible! You are a birdand I am a whale. "I have come to tell you that we arecousins," responded the trickster. Whale opened his eyes and slowly swamup to the small black bird and asked what he wanted. "Please come closer, Cousin Whale, sothat I may speak with you," requested Raven. Yousee, the smart bird knew that he would have lots of meat if he couldkill the whale.įinally, an idea came to him and hewalked up close to the whale who was resting near shore. Raven flew to the place and watchedthe whale for three days hoping to think of a way to trick it. The people in the village near the whale were afraid of it,and they were too scared to go fishing. He hadheard of a large whale near an island and so he went to see it forhimself. These are available for educational use only.Īs usual, Raven was hungry.
